Hardtack 2019 Taste Test

I wanted to try something a little different with this blog, so I’m going to start making videos! In this one, I mix up a batch of Civil War hardtack and give it a try. Check out the video here.

The recipe was pretty damn simple (even though I messed it up once, as you’ll see…) Just mix a cup of water with 2 cups of flour, flatten it with a rolling pin, cut it into squares, poke some holes, then bake it at 375 for 30 minutes on each side. There you go!

One main warning – be VERY careful to avoid cracking your teeth when eating this. It’s definitely a risk!

  1. When I was a kid growing up in East Texas in the 40s and 50s, people still made this now and then. The safest way to eat it without cracking your teeth was to soak it in your coffee or in some brown gravy.
